Chip Carter began serving as the Chief Information and Technology Officer for Mercy Corps on May 5, 2008.
He has more than 20 years of experience leading software engineering efforts and technology operations across large-scale, complex organizations.
He is the former Director of the Domino Server Engineering team for Lotus IBM. As such, Chip led a software development team of 150+ engineers and managers. Chip served in this role from 2004-2008.
From 1995 to 2004, Chip served at Lotus and Iris (a wholly owned subsidiary of Lotus) as a software engineer and manager for the Domino Administration team. Chip was hired in 1995 by Ray Ozzie (now the Chief Research Scientist at Microsoft). Following several years as a software engineer, Chip was promoted to senior software engineer and architect. In 2000, Chip was named Manager of the Domino Administration team and then Director of the Domino Server team in 2004. Chip was awarded Manager of the Year in 2007 in IBM’s Software Division, competing with more than 4,000 software engineering managers in a division of more than 45,000 engineers.
Chip got his start in software engineering at Lotus in 1989 working on Lotus 1-2-3. Prior to that Chip worked in academia, teaching ethics at the graduate level in New York City. He also made fine furniture in the Boston area for three years.
Chip received his undergraduate degree in biology from Davidson College in North Carolina in 1979. He has graduate degrees in theology and ethics from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, where he graduated summa cum laude, and from Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
Chip is married to Ingrid Markman and resides with his family in Andover, Massachusetts. They have a son and daughter. When not working, Chip is an avid jazz guitarist, woodworker and mountain biker.
