NetHope facilitates collaborative partnerships that focus on providing connectivity technology in developing regions around the world. This NetHope project is supported by partners including Cisco, Microsoft, The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, Google, Accenture and Baker & McKenzie.
The Connectivity Initiative focuses on increasing VSAT (very small aperture terminal) capacity in remote areas with little to no terrestrial infrastructure. VSAT systems include an earth station (usually less than 3 meters in size) placed outdoors in line of site to the sky so it may link to a space segment that consists of a satellite in geosynchronous orbit. VSAT enables NetHope members’ remote offices to connect to each other and to headquarters locations, a critical factor in supporting field programs and humanitarian service delivery. In 2009 and 2010 NetHope is focused on four areas:
VSAT Program Delivery – preferred provider pricing and services
VSAT Training - advanced training programs in Africa and South Asia to develop a skilled technical work force to provide technical support in areas where it is needed most
ICT Global Connectivity Database – creating a secure electronic repository for connectivity information to enable better decision-making and knowledge management
Connectivity Architecture – to leverage technology advances
Hundreds of successful connectivity deployments have been accomplished through the power of NetHope collaboration.
