A disaster strikes. An earthquake, a flood, a political conflict…natural or man-made…whatever the case…humanitarian agencies rush to respond working heroically to save lives and speed relief to those in need. Every emergency will have some need for the following basic requirements: health care, food, water, shelter, and reunification services.
A key enabler to any kind of response effort is “communications capacity.” Telephony (land lines, mobile devices, satellite phones) is always required. Internet access allows even more efficient one-to-many communications. Every NetHope member organization responding to an emergency must evaluate ICT capabilities immediately following the emergency and provide enabling communications capabilities as quickly as possible in the hours and days following an emergency.
NetHope has worked on Emergency Relief Services with its members and the broader humanitarian sector in the following ways since 2003:
Interagency coordination of ICT assessments and related response
Consolidation of ICT related appeals to the private sector
Knowledge sharing and development of ICT related hardware and software solutions to enable better communication
Enhance preparedness for emergencies in regions likely to be affected by emergencies through pre-deployment of equipment and training
Connectivity | Field Capacity Building | Emergency Relief | Shared Services | Innovation
