Mobile Telephone Opportunities
Source: Oxfam
The advent of mobile telephones is revolutionizing commerce and daily life in many developing regions
of the world. As the new technology extends telephone access to areas unreachable by landline, and the
cost of mobile service continues to drop, more and more of the world's poor are getting connected. In
Africa alone there are now twice as many mobiles as landline phones.
Sale of new mobiles is growing
exponentially, and innovative new uses are being tried. In Senegal, fishermen negotiate by mobile phone
with fish brokers for sale of the day's catch before their boats even return to port. In Bangladesh,
woman entrepreneurs purchase inexpensive mobiles and make them available to their neighbors on a
pay-per-call basis.
